Cultural Revolution
Exploring the urban impact of three major cultural centres, in China, Mexico and Canada
For the cover of this issue, we chose an image of the Tianjin Binhai Library in China, by Rotterdam firm MVRDV. When the library opened in 2018, it appeared as though the shelves were full of books. In fact, many of those books were merely photographs of spines placed on unreachable shelves. Patrick Pittman’s interview with principal architect Winy Maas is a candid conversation about the challenges, and sometimes failures, of working on ambitious projects in China. The issue also includes a timely essay by Nicholas Hune-Brown on what it means to be a photographer of architecture in the digital age.
